Hadrian VII
by Peter Luke
A rare production of a rare play: the adaptation of the brilliant fantasy-autobiography of Fr. Rolfe, directed by Tim Hancox. The play catches the mordant perverse humour of the original, expressing Rolfe's bitterness with the Roman Church in the early 1900s for refusing him the priesthood. In the play, a strong dramatic structure adds to the powerful fantasy: we see Rolfe writing his "autobiography" in a garret, then - in his fantasy - he is consecrated a priest, moves to Rome, is elected Pope, reforms the Papacy and is murdered at the height of his success.
It is enthralling drama: see website www.geds.ch and note it in your diaries!
