It is the beginning of a new semester at Rydell High School which has been chosen as a representative American High School by a local radio station, which will broadcast a live ball from the gym. The T-Birds (THE boys’ group) talk of their holidays and the girls they met. The Pink Ladies (THE girls’ group) meet newcomer to the school “Sandy” who has just arrived from Australia and is very worried about fitting in.
Now add the rival boys’ gang, The Scorpions, and the fact that Sandy has already met Danny (of the T-Birds) during the holidays that summer and the scene is all set to follow the hopes, aspirations, enthusiasms and feelings of first love of our characters as they make their typically difficult way towards adulthood via a dancing competition, a daring car race at Thunder Road and many adolescent crises.
Grease had its world theatrical premiere on Broadway in 1972, and has triumphed throughout the world, both in acclaimed theatres and in countless school productions. In 1979 Grease took over the record as the longest-running show in the history of Broadway, and the hit film starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton John proved to be the highest grossing movie musical ever.
The co-creators, Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, were friends for seven years before they collaborated on Grease, and it was over beer at a party when the idea first surfaced. Jacobs and Casey amused themselves imagining this new kind of musical, with music from the late Fifties and characters from the golden days of rock'n'roll.
This is the second GAOS summer production by its “Really Youthful Group”, as they call themselves! The group is entirely self-generating, and is led, this year, by Hugo Powell and Anna Tracey. They have used the summer holiday period for the preparation of the show.
