GENEVA ENGLISH DRAMA SOCIETY15-19 March 2005 ART, by Yasmina Reza, translated and adapted by Christopher Hampton Although the background to the play is about what is and is not art, the central theme is human relationships, which is what makes it funny, as a mid-life crisis affecting three best friends develops. The seeds of conflict are sown when Marc is outraged by the acquisition, by Serge, of a thoroughly modern painting for a huge sum of money. They call upon Yvan to mediate but Yvan, whose own life is in shambles, keeps vacillating between one friend and the other which merely adds fuel to the flame. At last, the three get together at Serge's where their spiraling recriminations about each other and their long-standing relationship reaches a climax and they literally come to blows! In the end, however, friendship prevails. The play was written in 1994 and won Molière awards for best play, best production and best author. Tom Courtney, Albert Finney and Ken Scott stared in the successful London version which won the Olivier Award for Best Comedy of the Year while, in the USA, Art won the Tony Award for Best Play in 1998.
