PLAYREADING - THE CIRCLE
A comedy. Arnold Champion Cheney, an ambitious young politician with a beautiful young wife, Elizabeth, has never forgotten nor ceased to resent his mother's elopement with Lord Porteous. The latter returns to the neighbourhood with Lady Kitty after a long exile. Arnold's father lives nearby and the situation threatens to become embarrassing. History seems to repeat itself as Elizabeth is drifting into a love affair with Edward Luton, one of the house party. Lady Kitty first tries to dissuade Elizabeth from eloping but finally actively encourages her with the help of Lord Porteous. Arnold and his father fight to preserve the shaky respectability of the family but are ultimately unable to stop the full circle of events.
