THE HOMECOMING
A drama. Teddy is the eldest son: he has made good despite his background and is a university lecturer in America. One night he pays his family a surprise visit with his wife, Ruth, but his education and respectability have made him a misfit in a household where amorality and squalor are the norm. At first hostile, Ruth gradually seems to fit into the family as if into a well-known niche. Ted's younger brothers, Lenny and Joey, and his father, Max, all take it for granted that she is anyone's for the asking - and she is. Max suggests that Lenny should set her up in trade in a little flat in Soho, so that she can contribute economically as well as physically to their comfort. Calmly Ruth lists the conditions she requires before accepting, barely turning her head as Teddy bids his family goodbye and starts his return journey to America alone.
