PLAYREADING - THE LAST YANKEE
A drama. The husbands of two patients in a state mental hospital engage conversation, the one a veteran of the waiting room and the other a newcomer in need of reassurance regarding the whole situation of his wife's illness and resulting hospitalisation. The men compare their different stories and begin to disagree about the relative merits of the state hospital versus a private one. Frick, the newcomer, somewhat condescendingly admires Leroy Hamilton's pride in keeping his wife at the state-owned institution. It turns out that the men have known each other before in a different context since Leroy is a carpenter who uses Frick's lumber yard. Frick becomes even more condescending to Leroy and the conversation completely degenerates into the kind of talk that Leroy says is driving people crazy.
